PostSubject: Pre-Employment Structure Clinical Interview (PESCI) for IMGs   Thu Dec 26, 2013 1:08 pm

Why an interview is required
As a result of the Council of Australian Governments International Medical Graduates assessment initiative, every international medical graduate (IMG) applying for registration via the Standard or Competent Authority Pathway in Australia is required to attend a pre-employment structured clinical interview (PESCI).
In line with this expectation, the Medical Board of Australia (MBA) and Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) have agreed to implement PESCIs as a mandatory prerequisite for IMGs seeking registration in Australia to practice

What is a PESCI
International medical graduates (IMGs) applying for registration to practice in Australia via the Standard or Competent Authority Pathway must attain a satisfactory outcome in a pre-employment structured clinical interview (PESCI).

A PESCI is a fitness for task assessment/interview where the panel assesses your skills, knowledge and experience for the position for which you are seeking registration to practice in Australia. PESCI result is only valid for the role indicated in the position description provided a particular PESCI. The result of the PESCI is not transferrable to another position.

Please note: A separate PESCI is required for each position and results are only valid for 12 months from the date of the interview.

Who must do a PESCI?
A PESCI is mandatory for IMGs seeking limited registration in Australia to practice in any of the following roles:

general practice
all non-specialist positions in private hospital facilities
senior medical officers
medical officers (with or without right of private practice)
medical superintendents (with or without right of private practice)

Applying for a PESCI Exemption/Waiver
All requests for exemptions for sitting a PESCI must be lodged with AHPRA at the link below:

https://www.ahpra.gov.au/about-ahpra/contact-us/make-an-enquiry.aspx

ACRRM does not hold the authority to make these exemptions, so all queries must be directed to AHPRA. More information about the PESCI Exemption process can be found at the AHPRA website.

Before you apply for a PESCI
To apply for a PESCI, you must provide evidence of the following:

have a medical qualification as listed on International Medical Education Directory (IMED)
have completed International English Language Test (IELTS) or equivalent obtained within past 2 years
have completed the Australian Medical Council (AMC) Multi Choice Questionnaire (MQC) or awarded a Certificate of Advance Standing
have a current job offer.*
*Please note that the position description needs to be completed by the practice to ensure is truly reflects the role of the IMG candidate in line with the delegated level of supervision. This document will form the basis of the assessment.

Note: ACRRM does not provide assessment for Level 1.
